About Golden Vale

I spent eleven years as an electrical engineer, mostly on commercial projects around Perth and later up in the Pilbara. The work was fine. I was good at it. But I kept notebooks the way some people keep tools, one for every project, and I was constantly annoyed by the ones falling apart by week three or the paper that bled through on the back of every page. In 2019 I drove down to a stationery trade show in Melbourne just to see what was actually available at the supply level, not the retail level. What I found was that most of the product sitting on shop shelves came from maybe four or five wholesale sources, and almost nobody was being straight with buyers about what they were actually getting.

Before Golden Vale existed, I was buying stationery in bulk for a community makerspace I helped set up in Ballarat after I moved there in late 2018. We needed reliable paper stock, decent pens, things people could actually use without them falling apart mid-session. I was spending roughly $400 a month across four or five different suppliers and getting inconsistent quality every single time. A batch of 80gsm notebooks from one supplier would be fine. The next batch, same product code, would have pages that curled within a week. I started keeping a spreadsheet logging every order, every complaint from the makerspace users, every return. By the middle of 2020 I had 14 months of data and a pretty clear picture of which suppliers were worth dealing with and which ones weren't.

She handles all inbound stock checks, packing, and dispatch from the Ballarat workshop, and built the current receiving checklist that catches weight and count discrepancies before they reach customers. She lives ten minutes from the workshop and has cut average dispatch time from three days down to one since she started.
• Declan Szabo — Customer Service and Returns: Declan came to Golden Vale in mid-2023 after spending four years in customer support for a Bendigo-based office supplies wholesaler. He manages all incoming queries, processes returns, and maintains the product feedback log that Mark uses when reviewing supplier contracts. He's the one who flagged that a particular gel pen batch was showing tip-skip complaints at a rate of roughly one in thirty units, which led to a supplier switch within six weeks.
• Yuen-Lin Marchetti — Product Research and Buying: Yuen-Lin joined in January 2024, bringing a background in procurement from her time sourcing paper goods for a mid-size Melbourne print-on-demand business she worked with for three years. She now handles supplier research, sample testing, and price benchmarking for any new product lines Mark is considering. Her first project was mapping out three alternative cardstock suppliers in Victoria and New South Wales so Golden Vale isn't reliant on a single source.

How long will my order take to arrive?

Standard shipping typically takes 3–7 business days for metro areas and 5–10 business days for regional and remote locations. Express orders placed before 2pm AEST Monday–Friday are usually dispatched same day and arrive within 1–3 business days in most capital cities.

Do you ship to PO boxes and parcel lockers?

Yes, we ship to PO boxes and Australia Post parcel lockers via standard Australia Post services. Express orders sent via StarTrack require a physical street address, so please keep that in mind when selecting your shipping option at checkout.

Can I return an item if I change my mind?

Yes, we accept change-of-mind returns within 30 days of delivery, provided the item is unused, in its original packaging, and in resaleable condition. Return postage costs are the buyer's responsibility for change-of-mind returns.

Do your notebooks or paper products contain any allergens or harmful chemicals?

Our notebooks, cardstock, and paper products are manufactured to standard office and stationery grades and do not contain known common allergens. The gel pens and highlighters use water-based ink and are non-toxic, though they are not certified for use by children under 3. If you have a specific sensitivity, feel free to email us and we can check product data sheets.

Do you offer custom or personalised products?

Do you do wholesale or trade accounts?

Do you offer gift wrapping?

We offer a basic gift wrap option at checkout for $4.95, which includes tissue paper and a plain kraft tag you can personalise with a handwritten note. We keep it simple — no elaborate packaging, just something presentable if it's going straight to someone as a gift.

What paper weight and size are the notebooks?

The Marque A4 Ruled Notebook is standard A4 (210 × 297mm) with 80gsm ruled pages, and the Artist Sketch Pad is A3 (297 × 420mm) at 160gsm, suitable for most dry and light wet media. The Cardstock Bundle is also A4 at a heavier 250gsm, which makes it suitable for card-making and mixed media projects.
